Investment Strategy and Performance

The Trustee Board decides where the Fund's money should be invested after seeking professional advice from its investment consultant, Fronteir Investment Consulting.

Assets are allocated within ranges set by the Board after consultation with its investment consultant. The Board reviews these ranges on a regular basis.

Details of where this money is invested can be found in the latest

Annual Report, or you can contact us to request the information.

Monthly Crediting Rates (non annualised)

From 1 July 2011, investment earnings are applied to members' accounts by way of a monthly crediting rate.

A monthly crediting rate is calculated by the Fund for each investment option. These rates are based on the actual performance of the investment assets underlying each option, less any applicable fees and taxes. The declared monthly crediting rates are actually applied to members' accounts following the end of the financial year, or an earlier benefit payment, based on transactions during the corresponding month.

The earnings to be applied are calculated from the date of the transaction (for example an employer contribution to your account) to the end of the month, based on that month's crediting rate. Crediting rates may be positive or negative, depending on the performance of the underlying investment assets. Investment earnings compound at the end of each month.

The declared monthly rate for each investment option will be set during the first week of the next month after the month to which the rate applies. Also, prior to the start of each month,  interim rates for each investment option will be set for the month ahead. Interim rates may temporarily apply for up to 3 months, and may be updated at any time. For example, on 1 March, the following rates will apply.

Dec

Declared

Jan

Interim

Feb

Interim

Mar

Interim

However, by 7 March, the final monthly rate for January will be declared, and the interim monthly rate for February / March may be reviewed. For example:

Dec

Declared

Jan

Declared

Feb

Interim

Mar

Interim

The final June rate is expected to be declared in the last week of August.

Any benefit payments made to members will include the declared monthly rates up to the end of the previous month, plus the interim monthly rate from that date to the date of payment. The interim monthly rate will be based on the investment performance of the applicable investment option for the month to date.

Investment Performance compared with objectives

The Trustee has in conjunction with its investment adviser, Frontier Investment Consulting, set inflation linked objectives for each Investment Option.  These objectives, or goals, are outlined below together with the corresponding return for that option.

While at face value the returns for most Options look disappointing when compared with the corresponding inflation related objective, it is important to highlight that these figures include one of the most volatile investment periods in memory.  Although returns for the last financial year were consistent with long-term expectations, recent volatility highlights that a full global economic and financial recovery is likely to still be some time away.

The long term returns for Mercy Super's options remain competitive with other funds when compared using the appropriate SuperRatings survey.

As superannuation investing is a long term activity for most of us, the Trustee has deliberately set goals that are expected to be realistic and achievable over time.  Some objectives are worded to include a probability, or likelihood, to reflect that it may not be possible to achieve that target for every five year period.

Giving you flexibility

You can now switch your investment option on a weekly basis at no cost. If your completed Change of Member Investment Choice form is received by close of business Wednesday, your switch will be effective from the following Monday.

If you are intending to review or change your investment Option, it is highly recommended that you take a few minutes to read the applicable sections of your Member Booklet  and latest Annual Report.

Notes

1.    The declared monthly crediting rate for each investment option is the investment return for the month after deducting all investment fees, expenses and provisions such as other fees and taxes.

2.    Interim crediting rates are only applied to your account if you exit the Fund prior to the Trustee declaring the monthly rate. The interim monthly crediting rate is based upon benchmark returns and may change at any time.

3.    The FYTD (Financial Year To Date) rate is calculated from 1 July each year. This rate is calculated by compounding the monthly rates that are available to the end of the last month. These rates are shown for comparative purposes only and will change as each month's crediting rate is declared or an interim rate is altered.

4. The above interim crediting rates are generally reviewed and updated monthly, however the rates are subject to change at any time. Please note - in the event that the crediting rates on the website differ from those on the Fund's administration system, the rates on the administration system will apply.
